Marvalyne Unique Tripp

Candidate for Saint Paul School Board

Saint Paul is ready for meaningful change. My name is Marvalyne Unique Tripp, and I'm running for the Saint Paul School Board because our students, families, and educators deserve a school system built on stability, transparency, and collaboration. We need a budget that truly reflects our values — one that informs policy, strengthens safety, and supports the people who make our schools thrive.

Rooted in Saint Paul

I grew up on the East Side and graduated from Johnson Senior High School. I continued my education at Saint Paul College and Metropolitan State University — experiences that deepened my commitment to public education and community advocacy.

Public Service & Community Leadership

Since 2021, I've served the community through the Saint Paul City Council in Ward 3 (Highland/Mac-Groveland), where I'm often the first person to answer your call to help you navigate city services. I am a proud AFSCME member and previously served as Vice President of Local 2508, City of Saint Paul Clerical Workers.

For the past few years I've served on the Board of Directors for the District 1 Southeast Community Organization District Council in Ward 7, where I chaired the Housing Justice Committee. During Metro Surge, our committee was one of the first in the city to organize a Know Your Rights presentation — because informed communities are empowered communities.

My passion has always been family and community advocacy.

Experience in Education & Child Protection

Since 2017, I've worked as a Lead Literacy Tutor with a nonprofit literacy organization in partnership with Saint Paul Public Schools and Saint Paul Public Libraries. I've seen firsthand how strong literacy support can change a child's trajectory.

I currently serve on the Minnesota Children's Justice Act Task Force and I'm a member of the Statewide Work Group providing implementation guidance and oversight on new legislation focused on restructuring Minnesota's child protection system. As part of the Workforce Sustainability Committee, I help ensure staff receive the training and support needed to collaborate effectively with families.

A Personal Journey That Shaped My Advocacy

At 14, I had to leave home to protect my safety and well-being. With limited support, I stayed focused, stayed in school, and graduated. Those experiences shaped my resilience and my understanding of what many young people face.

As a mother of a Saint Paul Public Schools student, I've learned how to advocate within the school system to break cycles and create opportunities I never had. Building strong relationships with my daughter's school has been essential to her success — and I want every family to have that same access and support.

Why I'm Running

I am grateful for the opportunity to run for the Saint Paul School Board. With your vote, I will work tirelessly to:

  • Align policies and budgets with community needs
  • Prioritize safety and well-being
  • Strengthen collaboration among staff, students, families, and community partners
  • Ensure transparency and accountability in every decision

I look forward to meeting with students, educators, and community members across Saint Paul throughout this campaign. Your voice matters, and I want to hear it.

Please reach out with any questions.

In Solidarity,
Marvalyne Unique Tripp
